I studied Chaucer at school. My year got a duff one, The Canon's Yeoman's Tale. Never heard of it? I'm not surprised. If I say it's about alchemy, I make it sound way more interesting than it is. My daughter fared much better with The Franklin's Tale, a haunting story about love and fidelity.
But the good thing about having read Chaucer is that you get to appreciate this sketch by Bill Bailey:

Speaking of studying Chaucer at school... overheard conversation between two very young girls stacking shelves in my beloved Waitrose:
Girl 1: So you dropping English then?
Girl 2: Yeah, just can't get me head round it.
Girl 1: Why?
Girl2: I thought we'd be studying books in English not ones by Chaucer. I mean what kind of language is that?

ReplyDeleteI seem to remember "doing" Chaucer at university but it was a very long time ago and I can't remember what we read at all.
